  Description of Seminar/Conference

Workshop Overview
The benefits of Scent-Work cannot be ignored. Let's learn to ignite one of the most powerful instinctual and emotional systems within the canine brain!

The natural instincts that empower our dogs to search and investigate their surroundings for food, friends and foe can be used to bring about behaviors that ‘Just feel good!’  Rob will show you how to introduce that wonderful exciting, euphoric anticipation that our dogs feel during search, You will learn how we, as dog trainers, can recreate the thrill of exploration, the pleasure of anticipation and the sheer indulgence within the eagerness of ‘The Find’.

We have all experienced the joy of shopping, looking forward to acquiring new goods, and the simple ‘feel good factor’ that this can bring about. Let's examine the many different ways in which this feeling can benefit our dogs. Let's learn how we can bring this anticipatory feeling into the classroom, training room and even the home. Let's become skilled at incorporating it into behavioral consultations, and into rehabilitation and recuperation exercises, for both dog and owner.

Learning Objectives
Canine scent-work is becoming more and more popular.  We have learnt a great deal about how dogs benefit from this fantastic pastime. The knowledge and ability our best friends demonstrate, can be enhanced by improving our handling skills and understanding ‘The Tacit Dimension’ of Canine Search.
Using some simple acronyms, and understanding the emotional learning canines experience will enable us to trouble-shoot and improve our scent-work classes and problem-solving abilities.

The Two Day Workshop
This two day seminar will follow a journey from conditioning scent-identification through to understanding the tacit knowledge of search.  We will examine how we can problem solve and progress our training, incorporating scent-work within other aspects of dog training.

Objectives:

  • Engender emotional learning within our dogs using scent-work
  • Gain valuable training knowledge from simple coaching ‘aides-mémoires’ that will enhance your scent classes
  • Benefit from coaching techniques that will improve your students' desire to learn
  • Build an enthusiasm in your dog that can be transferred into the behavioral problem solving environment
  • Transform valuable tacit knowledge within the scent-work environment, building your own foundations for successful searching
  • Develop ‘Coppinger’s predatory motor pattern’ to complete and fulfill your dogs’ natural desires
  • Understand canine training concepts that will help develop your training plans
  • Incorporate both Classical and Operant conditioning into commencing search
  • Gain an insight into incorporating imaginative scent-work training into your classes. After-all, ‘Why should law enforcement have all the fun!’
Understand and use a simple coaching methodology, developing your classes and search-work for the future.
