Certain responses are due to learning and others are based on heredity. Knowing what they are and how they affect the dog are a very important part of understanding why certain breeds behave the way they do. They are also a key element for trainers to better understand whether a behavior is modifiable at all. Severely punishing these innate behaviors can have serious consequences on the dog's well being.
