A functional assessment is the starting place for a good behavior modification program. A functional assessment will tell you what’s triggering the behavior, which gives the possibility of using antecedent control (management) to resolve the problem. After addressing physical issues such as health and enrichment, antecedent control is the preferred approach by Applied Behavior Analysts because this method causes the least stress on the trainee.
Of course, antecedent control isn’t always possible, so the next place to look is at positive reinforcement. If you can functionally relate the consequence to the behavior, you’re on your way to having an efficient, effective, minimally intrusive behavior modification plan in place.
